Walnut Grove, MN

What would be in Walnut Grove, MN??  Why, Little House on the Prairie's Laura Ingalls Wilder, of course.

On the way over, we saw lots and lots of fields where the corn can just barely be seen.  Wih all the rain and cold the past two months, it has been a challenge to get crops in.

The welcome sign to Walnut Grove (current population 689):

They have a real nice museum there with all the memorabilia:

There were a number of buildings around the property: little church

Little red schoolhouse:

Sod house:

This house had a lot of old time activities for kids:
:

Another building housed a lot of equipment from old town buildings:

This organ actually works.  Pushing the foot pedals pumps the air to allow it to play.

An old washing machine:

An old telephone booth:

Emma checked out this outhouse - a one holer!

A jail with actual prisoners:

The museum was selling t-shirts that said WWND??

Well, "What Would Nellie Do?" of course!

After visiting the museum, it was time for some lunch.  Where else??

We had some good sandwiches and then pumpkin and rhubarb pie for dessert.  Very good.

From Walnut Grove we drove about 30 miles over to Lake Benton where my cousin Gary Serie and his wife, Shirl, run the NAPA Auto Parts Store and Hardware Hank Hardware Store and visited with them.  We finally got back to the CG around 4:30 in time for some much-needed R&R!!

  1. I love that she is sitting in the old school house in the old desks with her ipod! Looks like fun. (Sure wish I had gone as a kid...ha!)
