January, 2011

Well, here it is, January 18th and we are still in Melissa.  Did not make it to the RGV yet as my aunt (June Serie) in Lake Benton, Mn passed away on the 4th so we decided to delay our trip south until February, and, instead, went north.
We left on Thursday, the 6th, drove to KC and spent the night.  The next day was a long, tenuous day as we drove in strong headwinds and snow for about 200 miles.  We were planning to stop in Sioux Falls for a couple of hours to see my sister, Judeen, and her husband, Jim, but they called us in the afternoon and said that the Pipestone, MN schools were closing early due to the drifting snow so we did not stop.  We made it to Pipestone about 4PM.  Here are a couple of pictures of the roads - this first one is early afternoon on I-29 in Iowa:

The next two are later in the day on Hiway 23 headed to Pipestone:

And this one is on our way home from MPLS (in southern MN):

On Friday evening we drove up to Lake Benton (20 miles) in blowing snow for a memorial serice at the church and then back to Pipestone to the hotel later that evening.  We had planned on staying two nights and leaving for MPLS on Sunday, but heard a weather forecast that was calling for more snow on Sunday.  So we attended the funeral on Saturday morning, and, after lunch, and visits with June's family and friends, we left and drove to MPLS to stay with Pam and Steve for a few days.  We always enjoy our visits there and this was no exception (except for the COLD and SNOW!!).  We went to an IMAX theater and saw a 3D film about an African safari and then went thru part of the MN zoo.  Had a great time (Thanks, Karin!).
We left MPLS on Wednesday, drove to Joplin, MO, spent the night and then drove home the next day.  We FOUND snow in TX as well (about 4 inches) but by Saturday, it was gone.
We both have DR appts coming up at the end of the month so we will stay put for now, but are planning our trek south to the RGV on February 5th.  In the meantime, we are enjoying our stay here and visiting with Julie and Ken and Gehrig and Emma.
Stay tuned...
