Headed toward HOME

We left Big Bend and Terlingua on Tuesday and drove to San Angelos.  Spent 3 nights in the State Park there.  Beautiful park and sites.

On Friday we left San Angelo and drove to Lake Whitney which is about 100 miles south of DFW.  We are here until Friday, the 29th, and then we will head back to Plano.

It was a fantastic trip - saw so many new things - and got to connect with friends and relatives again.

Already looking forward to doing it all again next year!!

Big Bend National Park 0 Day 2

On Monday we went back into the Park and went in a different direction.  Found a turn out for this canyon

There were some people that walked down to the canyon floor but we did not.

It was a long, narrow canyon.

More scenery along the way.

We came to an area on the western side of the park with information about the early days here.

Visitors' Center.  Alot of campers were here as their CG was just down the road.

We drove further to meet up with the river again.

We walked out to that sandbar (above) and Judy waded in.  She can now claim that she has waded into water at the highest point in the US (Arctic Ocean) and now one of the lowest points in the Southern US.

Here she was in 2011.

And high mountainous cliffs on the other side.

Same canyon from a distance.  According to the sign, that canyon is some 8 miles long.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Park and don't know why we didn't come over here sooner (lived in Texas for 30 years), but now we can say that we made it!!

Big Bend National Park - Day 1

On Sunday we drove thru a portion of the National Park.

In case you didn't know by now, Judy likes to take pictures of cacti!!

Can you name that bird?

We stopped here because it was lunch time and they do have a restaurant here.

But, a little background, this morning when we woke up, we had no electricity.  The CG host said power was out all the way to Alpine, some 70 miles north.  Apparently a transformer went out.

So, when we went into the restaurant, they had no power yet.  So, no lights but they did have a gas grill going outside for hamburgers and hot dogs.  They also had a good selection of sandwiches (chicken salad) which we had.
While we were there, the power did finally come on.  Had to believe that a transformer problem could affect everything as far south as the Park, but it did.

More scenery.

We did find this crossing where you could cross over into Mexico if you so desired.  We did not.

On one of the side roads we came to this.  Mexican walking sticks and various other trinkets, etc.

What happens is that there are Mexicans accross the river that bring this stuff over to the US side in the morning and then come back in the evening to take it back.  If you will notice, there is a bottle at the bottom of the rock to put the money in for any purchases that you make.  We did buy a walking stick for $10.

Several canoes on the river.

These cacti have flowers at the top.

Bluebonnets were almost always along the road.

It was a great 1st day and we looked forward to day 2.
