Western Travels Days 4-6, February/March 2016

On Thursday, 2/4, we left Alamogordo, NM, and headed for AZ.  Just outside of Alamogordo is the White Sands Proving Grounds.  Not much to see (except sand!).

And, after crossing a mountain range, AZ came into view.

Passed thru what is called 'Texas Canyon," a rocky section along the highway.

Made it to Benson; found our CG and got setup. Then we went exploring a little.  Here are a couple of pictures from the visitors' center in Benson.

On Friday we drove down to Tombstone, about 25 miles from Benson.
It is an old western town with Main Street (about 5 blocks) blocked off for traffic so you can just walk up and down the street.

This is a picture of the front of the Bird Cage Theater.   This theater was a combination theater, saloon, gambling parlor, and brothel that operated from 1881 to 1889 during the height of the silver boom.

You can ride around town in a stage coach.

The O.K. Corral is where the famous gunfight took place.

The Crib---

This is where the actual gunfight took place.  We were on bleachers behind this picture.

Doc Holliday.

The 'bad' guys - McLaurys and Clantons.

Doc and Wyatt Earp.

It was fun to watch.  Afterwards we had a late lunch at the Crystal Palace Saloon where they are "Still Serving Good Whiskey and Tolerable Water."

Inside

Weather was perfect - mid 60's and sunny.  Great way to spend an afternoon!!

Saturday morning the CG sponsored a waffle breakfast which we attended and then in the evening, they had a campfire.  Everyone brought hot dogs, etc. to cook and the CG provided s’mores.  Had a good time and met several people that come here every year for the winter (snowbirds!).

Judy took a number of pictures of the campground vegetation, etc.

Scenery is so different here in the SouthWest.  Nice change of pace.
