Arizona 2

We left Mesa on Friday, 3/9, and drove to Holbrook, AZ for the night.  It was a beautiful drive up and down mountains.  Saw some snow but not as much as last year.

On Saturday we left Holbrook, drove on I40 for a few miles and then took a two lane road north with a destination of 4 Corners and then Cortez, CO.  The scenery along this road was outstanding - most of it thru the Navajo Reservation.

We found the Navajo Lutheran Mission where our former choir director and her husband now work.  Unfortunately, we were not able to connect up with her beforehand.  But we did see the Mission.

More scenery along the way.

We did find '4 Corners' which is on Navajo land so it is run by them.  Cost was $10 to get in.

There was a small group of kids there with (parents??) so I asked one of them where they were from - Texas, she said.  So I said so are we - from Plano.  She they were from Rockwall, another suburb of Dallas.  Small world.  They were on spring break and headed to the Grand Canyon.

We did make it to Cortez, CO. and found our campground.  Stayed 2 nights.  The second night they were predicting temps in the low 20's so we unhooked our water hose the night before.

No snow in town but the mountains were covered, and, they were predicting more snow later in the week.  (Glad we were leaving!!).

On Monday we left Cortez and headed into New Mexico on our way to Albuquerque for a couple of nights.  Again, beautiful scenery.  What we didn't realize was that we were in mountains most of the way.  Signs along the way said we were at 7,000+ feet!!

We did make it to Albuquerque for 2 nights, then on to Amarillo for one night, and finally to Wichita Falls before getting home on Friday, 3/16!

Had a great time again as usual, but glad to be back home for awhile!!
