We left Tok and had an easy day of driving. Seems like there are always mountains to see and snow or icy rivers to view.
About 1/2 way we came to Delta Junction which is where the Alaska Highway officially ends.
We thought this temp gauge at the Visitor Center was informative:
The coldest temperature recorded was 72 degrees below on January 6, 1975.
And in case you didn't know if there were mosquitos in Alaska, they had these:
From here we continued our travel north to Fairbanks, found our CG (in North Pole, AK), and got setup. Then we drove into Fairbanks to get the lay of the land. And to get some drugs refilled! We found a nice SafeCo store, turned in our prescriptions, and did some grocery shopping. We spent over $100 so we got $.30 off a gallon of diesel. Good thing since it was $4.39 a gallon.
Just outside of Fairbanks, we stopped to see the oil pipeline:
When we pulled into the lot, we stopped behind a car and I noticed that it had TX plates and the "Lute Riley" insignia. That's a Dallas car if I've ever seen one!! We walked over to the pipeline and saw this couple. He was wearing a cowboy hat (not a football hat!) so we asked if they were in fact from Dallas. And they were! Too make matters even more (whatever??), she was a teacher in Allen. We may meet up with them later on since they are spending the summer here as well.
While we shopping at SafeCo, we noticed a familiar building so we came back to see what it was:
Next stop - gold mining.
