On Monday, the 1st we packed up and moved down the road (all of 85 miles) to Homer which is on the tip of the Kenai Peninsula. Here is the map:
Last week we found out that the Homer Middle School had a School Camper Host opening as of yesterday. Since we want to go fishing out of Homer on Friday, it made sense to move. The day was quite nice - these views are just before we saw the school.
Homer Spit is extends out into Kachemak Bay.
We are now setup with water and electric. Some views of our site:
Some views of the bay and the mountains in the background.
If you double-click on this one, you can see the glaciers.
Unfortunately, pictures just don't do justice. I sat outside for about two hours until it got too COLD (yes it did not reach 60 degrees!!).
Judy tried to connect to the Peninsula Borough wifi network but it didn't work. We talked with the school techie (in Soldotna) who said that the signal is weak here and to move our computer around. That didn't work either. Then I noticed a yellow wire coming out from under a door that looked familiar. So I brought out the computer and hooked it up, and, sure enough, we have a direct connection to the site. And there was another 20 feet of wire coiled up and laying by the door. Now all we needed was a connector so we found a Radio Shack and bought one. Now we have the wire coming thru the window. And it works great!!
Today we met up with a couple from Virginia (who also have a Hitchhiker trailer) and had lunch together on the Homer Spit. They have been taking the same basic route as us but have been about a week or two behind us. Anyway, they finally made their way out on to the Peninsula and are camped about 15 miles up the road in Anchor Point. Came back to our site after lunch and talked trailers for awhile. They will be leaving for Seward on Thursday.
It started raining last night and has been doing it on and off all day. Supposed to continue thru Thursday. Hope it quits by Friday for our fishing trip. We got our licenses yesterday so we are all set.
Will update you later in the week...
