Destruction Bay, YT

This is Monday, 5/26 (Memorial Day for those of you in the US).  We didn't get to celebrate it here!!

We left Whitehorse around 9 AM and started our 170 mile journey to Destruction Bay.

And, moving on down the road - guess what?  More mountain scenery.

The road is pretty good between Whitehorse and Haines Junction – we did hit some frost heaves, but didn’t think they were worth writing about.  However, when we got to the CG and started to setup, we noticed that the convection oven that we sit in a rocking chair by the back window had actually been thrown up and was sitting on end.  Also, we put our computer in another chair and wrap an afgan around it.  The computer was on the floor as well.  And a basket of misc stuff was all over the floor.  We were shocked!!

Here is our corner - to AK, that is.  This is called Haines Junction.  We hope to come back thru this way and go to Haines (supposed to be a beautiful drive thru mountains!!).  From Haines you can take a ferry over to Skagway and then take the train ride up the mountain which follows the gold rush trail.

Another option we are thinking about would be to drive to Skagway, thru beautiful mountains of course, and the ferry over to Haines.  Haines is supposed to be popular because you can get tours on the gold rush.  And you might even meet some of the people on the Gold Rush show on the Discovery Channel.

Continuing on to Destruction Bay:

As the sign says, this is Kluane Lake.  Our CG is about half way around it.

Some parts are still iced over.

This is in our CG looking back toward the mountains.

And this looks out to the lake.

In 2011 we were the only ones in the CG.  This year there are a few worker campers.  And after we got set up, a couple more campers pulled in for the night.  We are in the back.

This shot is toward the lake and the other campers are hidden behind us.

In a remote area like this, there are no TV channels available.  Fortunately, before we left TX, we recorded a lot of stuff and, now, when we don't have cable or antenna, we can still entertain ourselves!

We watched TV until around 11PM and then noticed that the sun was just going down so had to have a pic!

Sunrise is early up here too - around 5AM or so.  Good night all...
