Tucson 2

Yesterday we visited the San Xavier Mission.  Very impressive.  It was started in 1783 and finished in 1794.  Actually they ran out of money and had to stop.  So the tower on the right did not get finished.  It was founded by a Jesuit missionary who traveled throughout the northern part of Mexico and the Southwestern parts of the US, bringing catholicism to the indigenous peoples of the area.

The flags of 4 nations have hung over the Mission - Spain, Mexico, America, and the Tohono O'odham nation (seen below).

Artwork.

This door is over 300 years old, and, we touched it!!  Who can say that they have touched something that is that old??

This is a replica of the mission.

The sanctuary looking to the front.

A picture of the Last Supper on one of the walls.

Look at all the statues.  There are many throughtout the parish.

Choir loft here but under renovation.

Part of the ceiling.

There is a smaller building for lighting candles.  Very warm at the doorway with all the candles.

Judy lit a candle.

As always, plenty of cacti in this part of the country.

Now, from there we decided to find the airplane boneyard which is next to the AFB.  We had been here a few years ago )2016) and were just amazed at the number of old military aircraft here.

However, it appears that they have been 'recycling' them because there are not that many left.

More cactus, of course.

That brings you up to date for now...

  1. We visited the airplane graveyard in Dec. Very neat to see. Will you drive through Saguaro National Park? It's the only National Park inside city limits and is split by the city (two visitors' centers and entrances).
