Instead, we headed 6 miles north of town to a place called Hat Creek Ranch.
For $11 (the Senior rate) each, we took a self-guided tour of the entire grounds. (Because the season is still eary, Judy and I were almost the only visitors, until a bus came in with a load of people from Australia, of all places!).
There was a time when this ranch was a major stopping point along the '8th Wonder of the World' - the Cariboo Wagon Road. This ranch was established in 1860 to cater to the thousands of gold miners heading to the Cariboo Mountain gold fields at Barkerville. It is the last remaining roadhouse and one of the largest ever known along the Caribou Wagon Trail. It has been added on to and now looks like this. The rooms are still pretty much the same.
This young lady was our tour guide for Mom and I (since no one else was there). There are three sheep on the grounds and she was feeding them carrots.
We saw three Shusap First Nation Indian maidens each do an interpretive dance and also learned about their heritage.
We visited a Shusap village display. This is one of their houses, called a Kekuli, an underground lodging pithouse. Twenty five to thirty people can live in here.
This is from the inside looking out. The women used this entry
while the men used the one out the roof.
These were some examples of hand-made dolls.
We took a ride in a stagecoach.
They had a lot of old farm equipment around the ranch.
and had this covered wagon for rides as well.
We had planned to leave Cache Creek this AM but it was raining (again!!. For an arid, desert-like area, we had rain two of the four days we were there).
Anyway, the rain stopped around 11:30 so we decided to pack up and go. It was a long day - 280 miles - so we didn't get to Prince George until after 6 this evening. After a couple of days of R&R, we will head up the road to Dawson Creek where we will start the ALCAN Highway.
Later...
