Shelburne Museum

On Tuesday we spent several hours at the Shelburne Museum which is a great place to visit.  It covers about 48 acres, and, over 150,000 works are exhibited in 38 exhibition buildings, 25 of which are historic and were relocated to the museum grounds.

Electra Havemeyer Webb was a collector of American antiques and was the founder of the Museum.  She was married to polo champion James Watson Webb II of the Vanderbilt family.  We first took the tram around the museum to get an idea of where everything is.

The first building we went into was the Carousel Building.

This carousel extends all the way around the building.  It took 28 years for the man to carve all the people, animals, etc.  Unbelievable.

We saw the train exhibit

and then made it over to the Ticonderoga for a tour.  We covered all three levels with a great narrative by the tour guide.

Had lunch and then ….

We also toured a house built for a lady who lived in New York City.  She had a 3 story apartment there and had it all brought here, piece by piece.

She had some Monet and Rembrandt pictures that are now here.

From the museum we went to a winery and tasted local wines.

On Thursday morning we went back to the museum (our tickets were for two days) and went to The Toy house which included many old toys and two working American Flyer trains.

Numerous carriages from years ago.

Saw an old jail with two cells.

Visited the Print Shop that included many old printing presses.  Had a demonstration of several presses.  Unfortunately no pictures.

Beautiful grounds.

Could have spent another day here with all that there is to see.  If you are ever in the area, it is a place NOT to be missed!
